Metro rail is a rapid transit system that provides fast and reliable transportation for urban areas. Metro rail can reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and travel time for commuters. Metro rail can also boost the economic and social development of the cities it serves.
In Bangladesh, metro rail is a relatively new mode of transport that aims to improve the mobility and connectivity of the Dhaka metropolitan area. Dhaka is one of the most densely populated and congested cities in the world, with an estimated population of over 21 million people. Dhaka suffers from chronic traffic jams, poor road conditions, inadequate public transport, and high levels of air and noise pollution. These problems affect the quality of life, productivity, and health of the residents and visitors of Dhaka.
When Metro Rail Started in Bangladesh
To address these challenges, the government of Bangladesh initiated the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project in 2012, with the vision of creating a modern and efficient metro rail system for Dhaka. The project is being implemented by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges. The project involves the construction of six metro rail lines, covering a total length of 174 km and serving 128 stations. The project is expected to be completed by 2030.
History Of Dhaka Metro Rail
The idea of building a metro rail system in Dhaka dates back to the 1980s when several feasibility studies were conducted by different agencies. However, due to various technical, financial, and political constraints, the project did not materialize until 2012, when the government approved the first phase of the MRT project.
The first phase consists of two metro rail lines: Line 6 and Line 1. Line 6 is the first and longest line of the MRT network, running from Uttara to Motijheel via Mirpur and Farmgate. Line 6 has a length of 20 km and serves 16 stations. Line 1 is the second line of the MRT network, running from Airport to Kamalapur via Purbachal New Town. Line 1 has a length of 20 km and serves 17 stations.
